Cosmos Wire Eroding was started in 1995 by Kevin (Tool and Die maker) and his wife Sarah (Bookkeeper) working from their residential home in Merrivale, KwaZulu-Natal, after seeing a need for a contract wire eroding service for the greater Pietermaritzburg area.

The company started with just one small, Chinese-made reciprocating machine on the back veranda and has grown steadily into a fully-fledged toolmaking facility concentrating on wire erosion for companies that don’t have the need for a machine all of the time.

By 2003, Cosmos’ workforce had grown to include two additional toolmakers, so the company decided to relocate to a small holding with bigger facilities in Merrivale, Howick, KwaZulu-Natal.

The team put a lot of time and effort into building a top-class facility at the new location, with tiled floors, air-conditioning and space for more machines in the future.

Over the next 10 years, Cosmos Wire Eroding grew significantly. By 2013, the company was contracting to toolrooms all over South Africa, with a focus on Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

However, in September a fire destroyed Cosmos’ facility, with the company losing all their machines.

The devastating fire meant Cosmos Wire Eroding had to start building again. With the help from insurance and a grant from the Department of Trade and Industries, Cosmos Wire Eroding was back to full capacity within one year.

Today Cosmos still prides itsself as being the complete one stop wire and spark eroding facility with around-the-clock personal service.
